COMMISSIONED PIECE
This painting is entitled Prince Edward Island Blessings. It is an image of French River, PEI, and a field of sunflowers. My impressionistic style strives to convey mood and emotion through colour, composition, and form. The theme helps us to raise up our spirits by recognizing all of the good things we have in our lives: a clear sky, nature’s beauty, the work of farmers, fishers and frontline workers, our children and families, our time to reflect and appreciate all of these blessings and so much more. I also strive to convey my hope, trust and faith in our shared tomorrows.

Sister painting to
FISHERMAN’S CHURCH
16 by 20 inches
acrylic on canvas
Shifting dunes and outlets to the ocean leave hints of constant changes both slow and steady but sometimes dramatically swift and brutally sweeping in extent. Here, a weather beaten, stunted white spruce has taken tenuous root next to the half buried remains of much larger white spruce driftwood tree trunk. Wind and coastal currents will wash away entire stretches of beach, carrying away and re-depositing logs and entire trees as a part of their natural processes. How blessed we are, through our sole ability within earthly nature, to take note and wonder at and about such things.

For many years, the hilltop Fisherman’s Church was a welcoming waypoint, often visible to tired returning sailors from the local fishing grounds. It was a beacon of community and faith guiding fishers, farmers, and townspeople alike through all manner of dark and dreary nights and times. Today, and throughout the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, many churches strive to be glimmers of hope and orientation to the lost or misguided traveller seeking direction and refuge.

PEI COUNTRY ROAD
16 by 20 inches
acrylic on canvas
In the course of lives, many memories accumulate and direct our perceptions of cataclysmic events. Sometimes egregious events are so universally jarring that the broadest spectrum of humanity shudders in revulsion across the breadth and depth of many peoples and nations. The heroism of the many, and the despotism of the few, register equally in the collective memory to resolutely and prayerfully hasten us to solidarity in our worldwide condemnation of every tyrant’s subjugation of justice, liberty, and peace.

“Waiting for spring” is a phrase whose meaning is entirely at the mercy of the context in which it is ensconced. In Prince Edward Island, it is an idyllic notion that anticipates the gentle and timeless transition from the peaceful deep sleep of myriad winter’s creatures and plants to birth and rebirth. In the Ukraine of 2022, it is anything but such an idyllic human construct of nature. Rather, it is the violent and immediate reality of surviving winter’s bitter cold and the coming storms amidst the debilitating and murderous indiscriminate shelling and purposeful destruction by a tyrannical megalomaniac. To live? To die? … To fight on? …To capitulate … and merely exist? Or to perhaps prevail, earn eartly admiration, and gain freedom from such as Vladimir Putin!

WAITING FOR SPRING
16 by 20 inches
acrylic on canvas
Over and over again, in history, megalomania and power-by-might unite in one individual who knows nothing of lasting importance to humanity. No higher calling or inspired thought has revealed the light of compassion, love, servitude, freedom, gratitude, grace, forgiveness, and justice to their dim eyes and their shallow perceptions. More than a temporal accounting will judge the use of their time and efforts. A life wasted in shallow pursuits is one thing; however, a life spent applying power towards selfishness, hatred, enslavement, and subjugation knows the hardened heart – its utter darkness and true self-loathing.

LONESOME SHORE 2022
20 by 24
Acrylic on Canvas
There is a colourful beauty and a peaceful symmetry often found where sand meets the sea. The subtle play of light on clouds both loftily near and sweepingly far introduces an undeniable harmony of hues and shades. And the slightest changes of slope, the work of the wind, and the wet of a receding tide on the beach rivals the complexity of the canopy’s composition. Consider, also, the energy and captivating patterns of the rhythmic waves born of the wind and the touch of the approaching shore. Natural beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder but it is only named and appreciated in the human mind. And in that we are specially blessed and equally held stewardly accountable. Without a human awareness, surely there exists a disquieting and profound loneliness to any beach and to all of creation. It is such a loneliness that drives the truly solitary human being towards a sense of purposeless existence and madness. How tragic when such a cognizant wonder of creation misses the Godly point and purpose of its own existence.

It was not about the sand, the water, nor the clouds and sun in the sky. It was always about the Children and the Son.

The beauty, serenity, and peace of a warm spring day at Lakeside Beach is a blessing to behold. The worries of the winter, the world, the contagion and brutal war are vanquished for a moment, and the soul can reflect on its greater purpose and focus. But is it the land, the sea, the sky, the breeze, and the shifting colours of grasses, sands, and waves that vanquish and offer reflection? In my view, it is the gentle human interactions of family and companions that offer respite from discord and uncertainty. Without human interaction, a hollowness and loneliness persists despite great natural beauty. And, in a similar manner, a hollowness and loneliness will always persist without personal faith and experience in a loving God. Especially in these troubling days, it is time for worldwide prayer – upholding those who cannot, or will not, be a part of the beauty, serenity, and peace of God’s love. Pray for the helpless, and pray for the hardened hearted, as well.

Every bench has a history; this one much more so than most. Who built it, how was it built, and when did it come into being? Why was it placed here? But, as is the case with much greater things, such questions about this bench miss the insightful mark: not the how, nor the when, nor the where nor even the why… but rather the loves behind the why and all the other questions. Why not sit down, close your eyes, and rest awhile…and listen with an open mind and a receptive heart.
