OCEAN STORM: FAITH OR FEAR (2020)
16″ X 20″ Acrylic on canvas with
regular stretcher
Commentary:
In my view, fear and faith were inextricably linked for humans a very long time ago, with fear playing the more catalytic role. It seems to me our primal fears of death, darkness, and dying all alone drove humankind to respond, at some point in time on our collective journey, with “faith”. Faith took the form of a god, or pantheon of gods, for specific protection from impending peril and subsequent death, from total darkness, and especially from dying alone in total darkness – gone, vanished, without a trace, without hope, and with no consequence of our existence, … seemingly complete oblivion.

THE LIONS DEN: FAITH OVER FEAR (2020)
16″ X 20″ Acrylic on canvas with
regular stretcher
Commentary:
But then something changed, and Faith became a purpose for living rather than a perceived remedy for assuaging primal fears. With a reasoned resolve that love is both our ultimate purpose and our ongoing sustenance, all humanity then needed was incontrovertible proof of that purpose and an absolute pattern for successfully living a life of love. And that, dear fellow traveler, I believe was provided two thousand years ago on a dark and terrible night of loneliest suffering and darkest death. Faith and fear remain inextricably linked in our singular journey but with Faith and Grace – now discernable – all our primal fears are vanquished…forever.

Commentary:
This painting speaks to the beauty and calming effect of a dramatic sunset. It depicts a quiet evening vista on the Ottawa River: In the foreground an empty and moored rustic rowboat evokes an introspective moment regarding not being in a hurry to miss the importance of a sunset to one’s reason for living. I believe you cannot find beauty in a sunset without having hope in tomorrow. With the inclusion of the rowboat, an open-ended story is introduced about … a tomorrow. I seek to convey emotion and relevance over preoccupation with form in my artwork.

SUNSET ON BOB’S LAKE, ON (2020)

Commentary:
My impressionist style conveys mood and emotion through composition, colour and form. This painting speaks to the beauty and calming effect of a sunset seen through a partial foreground of trees; a quiet evening with the hint of coming nightfall upon a darkening forest. In the distance two kayakers sit motionless, evoking an introspective moment regarding the importance of sharing a sunset. I believe you cannot help but find beauty in a sunset, when you have hope in tomorrow.

LUNENBURG LADY commemorates an extraordinary historical presence that once graced the Grand Banks and the hearts and minds of every Nova Scotian. She was a dockside working girl, to be sure, and she carried herself with pride. First to market and first before all, her fame would become the pride of a young emerging nation. Other pretenders could only give her chase, try as they might with their lilywhite wings. Oh sorrowful day, when she finally went down to the sea.

“Your quiet smile – so heartwarming,
Now breaks my heart anew.
Your quiet gaze – from sad eyes falling,
Still fighting to get through.
Precious one, so many holding,
To highest thoughts please cling.
Oh loving God, are you hearing?…
‘Help the broken sing.’ “

THE ICE CAVE is a visual arts metaphor for the often debilitating condition of post traumatic stress disorder. When our self-worth and our importance to others is in doubt; … when our ability to focus our reason, ask the difficult introspective questions, and find a firm footing is overwhelmed; … and when existential questions concerning our specific purpose for existing and “soldiering on” go unanswered, … are these not matters that a personal faith (i.e. beliefs) may help to address?

The casual viewer might note alluding compositional elements; however, the overall effect is an entirely different perspective and pronouncement regarding the possible outcome of a human life. Late in winter, when snow struggles to hold its icy grip, the beauty of obscure-orchid coloured blueberry fields in PEI heralds a coming late summer’s fruit harvest. A short step of further existential inquiry and one may glimpse a mystery so deep – yet so evident – that it makes the loving heart sing, in a place where fear has been displaced by faith. “Oh death, where is thy sting?”

On February 20, 1959, the Canadian Government incredulously cancelled the Avro CF105 Arrow jet fighter interceptor program. Within weeks seven years of astonishing Canadian excellence in aerospace ingenuity and the imminent completion of five world leading production-standard aircraft would be systematically and utterly destroyed. The dreams of demonstrably talented scientists and engineers, the futures of two highly successful major Canadian industrial partners, and the viability of a host of supporting companies and suppliers were dashed into oblivion by stupidity and an obstinate lack of political vision. Beyond the immediate jobs lost and a cutting edge industry squandered, the economic and social impacts reverberate to this very day and into this country’s future. Another equally sorrowful tragedy for Canada Bereft! At what point do all Canadians raise their eyes and start looking forward?

The sister painting to “WE STOOD ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS, 1952” this composition titled STOLEN DREAMS, 1957 continues the theme of the consequences of political expediency, associated incompetence, and the pitiful abrogation of duty and responsibility to one’s elected office. The abrupt and ludicrous discontinuation of the AVRO ARROW program, stole the hopes and opportunities of a Canadian generation of brilliant minds and highly skilled aerospace workers, many of whom, immediately following the decimation, emigrated to the United States and its competing aerospace industry.

This is a commissioned piece: an impressionistic view of a stained glass window. While classical stained glass windows are typically beautiful and somewhat thought provoking, they may lack the brutal emotion and savagery of the event being depicted in juxtaposition with the unfathomable patience and infinite love of God.
